During our group exercise, with our eyes were all closed, we were able to form a very nice square. Even though it took us 30 minutes to form a square, I thought we did a nice job for reaching our goal.
At first, it was chaotic because there was no process and lack of clarity and structure. The people that have done this exercise before were not allowed to talk in the beginning. We did not assign or have a group leader to give instructions. There was a few that was trying to give directions. Since it was my first time doing this exercise, I thought it was so confusing. I would hear people talking at the same time trying to give different directions. It felt like we had more than one groups. Towards the end, one person tried to give directions and everyone else was listening to the directions and participating. We finally were able to form a square.
It was an interesting exercise because it shows how a group of people can work as a team to get a job done. However, we would have been more effective if we did the exercise differently. Both the experienced and inexperienced ones should be allowed to talk throughout the activity. One of the experienced people should have volunteered or we should have selected him/her to be the leader of the group to give out instructions. That way, with the same set of instructions, everyone would be on the same page and work towards the same goal. With clear instructions, the whole group could work together more effeciently and form a square faster.
I agree that people can work together as a group. We just need a clear picture of the game, a great leader, and some incentives to play the game. Maybe next time we should select someone to be the leader.
